Picatinny Squadron Joins 152 Year Old Memorial Day Parade

Members of the Picatinny Composite Squadron of the Civil Air Patrol marched down East Main Street Rockaway to honor the nation’s fallen soldiers on Memorial Day. This parade was organized by the Rockaway, Marcella, and Denville Memorial Association and stopped at three points along the route where gun salutes were given and wreaths laid.

“The route starts at the site of the Lackawanna Station, where the bodies and the living came back from the Civil War,” said Phyllis Vialard, the Secretary of the Memorial Association and organizer of the parade. “We have never missed honoring our war dead.”

Cadet Commander C/Capt Julia Russo lead six cadets and two senior members along the route directly behind the Hackettstown Colonial Musketeers Drum Corps.

The first of three stops was an all-veterans memorial in front of the town library constructed after the Korean War where a wreath was laid. Next, the parade stopped at the bridge spanning the Rockaway River. Finally, the parade concluded at a Civil War monument erected by the Memorial Association in 1892 where a second wreath was laid.

Representatives from the squadron included: Maj Robert Tambini, Capt Sean Mooney, C/Capt Julia Russo, C/MSgt Joshua Enberg, C/A1C Jacob Krijger, C/A1C Cassandra Scherr, C/A1C Rachel Olinski, C/Amn Alison Dutton, C/Amn Iain Mills.
